GAUTENG – On Thursday, 13 February 2025, the South African Police Service in Tshwane executed Operation Shanela in the Bronkhorstspruit and Cullinan policing precincts. With Major-General Samuel Thine in command of the operation, team Tshwane executed the operation with a multi-stakeholder approach, with Department of Home Affairs, Gauteng Traffic Department, Gauteng Traffic Wardens and Tshwane Metropolitan Police, resulting in the apprehension of 341 individuals for various offenses. The operation focused on key priorities, including the removal of unlicensed firearms, apprehension of wanted suspects, and enforcement of liquor license compliance. With the first phase of the operation executed by the Tshwane Detectives, 285 individuals were apprehended for serious offenses, including, 92 arrests for gender-based violence, 44 arrests for assault to inflict Grievous bodily harm, 4 for murder, 1 for attempted murder, 5 arrests for armed robbery, and 2 arrest for rape. With a roadblock and 2 tactical teams assembled, 35 illegal immigrants were detained and are awaiting legal processes for deportation with 2 persons being arrested and fined for employing illegal immigrants. 3 suspects was arrested for possession and dealing in drugs, with 5 ziplock bags containing various substances and a bucket filled with dagga. 1 Person was arrested for possession of illicit cigarettes when 24 280 loose cigarettes were found in his possession. During this operation, 4461 persons and 928 vehicles were searched with 15 vehicles being tested to verify whether they had been stolen. This resulted in the arrest of a suspect that was in possession of a vehicle highjacked in Ekangala earlier in the month. 1 suspect wanted for attempted murder were traced and arrested and will be appearing in court on Friday, 2025-0-14. 88 AARTO infringement notices were issued by traffic officials, totaling R54 250, with 1 vehicle being discontinued for non-compliance with the Road Traffic Act. 2 persons were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol Further, 32 identified premises and hotspots were searched and patrolled.
2 liquor establishments were also inspected which led to the closure of both premises and the confiscation of 86 900 ml of alcohol for non-compliance with the Liquor Act.
