Steveno van Rhyn labeled ‘Menace to Society’ in Joslin Smith case
Social worker Errol Peterson has branded Steveno van Rhyn a “menace to society” during the sentencing phase of the Joslin Smith case at the Saldanha Bay Circuit High Court.
Van Rhyn, convicted alongside Kelly Smith and Jacquen Appollis of kidnapping and human trafficking in the disappearance of six-year-old Joslin Smith in February 2024, showed no remorse, according to Peterson.
“Upon questioning, he callously stated that he does not care what happened to Joslin,” Peterson testified, highlighting van Rhyn’s lack of sympathy for the missing child.
Peterson’s probation report detailed van Rhyn’s history of run-ins with the law and a propensity for violence, noting that those close to him described him as “highly strung” and prone to assaulting others.
Despite opportunities for rehabilitation, van Rhyn reportedly disregarded them, reinforcing Peterson’s assessment that he would likely reoffend if acquitted.
The trio may face life imprisonment, with sentencing proceedings ongoing. The case, which has gripped South Africa, continues to unfold as the court hears further testimony, with no trace of Joslin found since her disappearance.
