A tragic road accident in western Kenya has claimed the lives of 25 people who were returning from a funeral.
Authorities say the driver lost control of the bus, which veered off the Kisumu-Kakamega Highway and overturned in a ditch. The area is known for frequent fatal crashes. At the scene, 21 people — including 10 women, 10 men, and one young girl — were pronounced dead. Another 20 passengers were injured, five critically. Four more later died in hospital.
The victims, believed to be members of the same extended family, had been traveling from a burial in Nyahera to Nyakach. The bus, normally used by a secondary school, was serving as funeral transport at the time.
Emergency teams have appealed for urgent blood donations to assist survivors. Officials have urged drivers to be more cautious, stressing the country’s growing problem with deadly road accidents.
Kenya’s president has called for swift action against any negligence linked to the crash and for stronger enforcement of traffic laws to improve safety. Authorities are now investigating the exact cause of the accident.
The tragedy follows a series of recent fatal incidents in the country, including a light aircraft crash in Nairobi and multiple deadly road collisions in the past week. Statistics show road fatalities in Kenya have risen sharply in recent years, with thousands killed annually.
