WESTERN CAPE – The vigilance of members attached to the Provincial Counterfeit and Illicit Goods Team who were deployed to hotspot areas such as Philippi East, Browns farm, Gugulethu, Langa and Nyanga yesterday, paid off when members arrested a 17-year-old male who was caught red-handed in an act of armed robbery. On Sunday, 18 August 2024 at about 14:50, the members performed crime combatting patrols in an unmarked vehicle when they witnessed how four young men halted and robbed an adult male from his cellular telephone and some cash. The members reacted instantly and chased the fleeing suspects on foot. The suspects split into different directions when they noticed the members approaching. The members managed to apprehend a 17-year-old suspect after he tossed a firearm into an adjacent yard in Lundena Street. Members retrieved the firearm. The suspect faces charges of armed robbery and the unlawful possession of a firearm. He is expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrates’ court once charged.
