Media Statement BLOEMFONTEIN – The Free State High Court in Bloemfontein sentenced Sello Peter Motlane to an effective 15 years’ direct imprisonment for the murder of his girlfriend. The accused, aged 34, was living with his 27-year-old girlfriend named Joyce Lindiwe Motseki at Section D, Botshabelo. On 31 December 2022, a fight started between the two and the girlfriend ran away to her friend’s place. The accused went after the victim looking for her. As the victim realised that the accused was close to finding her, she then ran away to another friend in Section L, Botshabelo. The accused managed to find the victim at her friend’s place the following day on, 01 January 2023 at about 18:00. In an attempt to run away, she fell and the accused started beating and kicking her while she was on the ground. Community members called for help. Police and Emergency Medical Personnel responded swiftly. The victim was taken to hospital and died five days later due to head injuries. A case of murder was opened for investigation and assigned to Detective Sergeant Molahloe Maqekoane of Botshabelo Detective Unit. The accused was traced and apprehended on 02 January 2023. On 07 May 2024, Judge Naidoo of Free State High Court found accused guilty of murder and sentenced him to 15 years’ direct imprisonment. Ends
